Not a hero, not a villain -- something far more dangerous. He plays by no rules except his own, answers to no code except desire, and the world is simply collateral in the wake of his love.
Why Readers Love Anti-Hero
The anti-hero is irresistible because he's competent, confident, and utterly unapologetic. He doesn't pretend to be good — he's just devastatingly effective and devoted to one person. Readers love the fantasy of someone who bends the world to their will and chooses to bend it around you.
Common Story Setups
- A thief who steals from the powerful and falls for someone who makes him want to be caught
- A mercenary whose only non-negotiable contract is the one they made with their heart
- A vigilante whose sense of justice is brutal but never touches the person they love
- A con artist who runs out of lies when they meet the one person they can't deceive

Writing Tip
Give the anti-hero a code — even if it's a twisted one. Random cruelty isn't interesting; principled ruthlessness is. The reader should understand why they do terrible things, even when they can't condone it.
